It’s difficult to nail Wolf Alice down to a single genre, with their style ranging from dream-pop to punk. However, since the release of debut EP Blush last October, the band’s popularity has rocketed, with Tuesday’s show at The Haunt nestling in the middle of a 16-show UK tour.
The bratty essence of Ellie Roswell’s vocals topped off a uniquely energetic show, with a polished stage presence further enhancing an encapsulating performance.
Roswell’s sinister peers and drowned-out vocals attracted much attention, adding further insincerity to the scattered style. Guitar solos were lost in a mess of searing feedback as bassist Joel Amey rocked out around the stage.
The stop-start nature of each track made for a highly sporadic set. The busy sound of tracks, such as Fluffy, allowed the audience to fly around, before instant soft breakdowns created peace.
A short encore saw the band delve into tracks from new EP, Creature Songs. The heavily building riffs and dark vocals remain, with the four-piece continuing where they left off.
Wolf Alice’s individual approach combines influences from both sides of the Atlantic and their live performance is about as captivating as it gets. The UK outfit is clearly one to watch.
