Barb Jungr wooed a packed crowd, who were mostly of a certain age, as she promoted her 2014 album Hard Rain – The Songs Of Bob Dylan And Leonard Cohen.
Accompanied on piano by Simon Wallace, who produced the album, the established interpreter of Dylan songs took the audience on a journey through the “P” songs, the political and philosophical songs of Dylan and Cohen, saying she was at an age where she didn’t want to focus simply on love songs.
Jungr, 60, began with Dylan’s It’s Alright Ma, followed by Cohen’s Who By Fire, and throughout her two-hour set made interesting comparisons between the two legendary singer-songwriters.
After performing Masters Of War, Jungr said, “Dylan goes to places Cohen never does, but Cohen fans will know once or twice Cohen has gone darker”, before performing Cohen’s The Future.
As a female vocalist, performing in a cabaret style and hitting lots of high notes, Jungr brought her own interpretation and emphasis to the lyrics and made them her own. She also managed to make lots of comical references to the two singers, and questioned Dylan’s view of women in his lyrics.
Jungr played harmonica on Blind Willie McTell but otherwise comfortably relied simply on her voice and Wallace’s piano skills.
For a contrasting finale, Jungr ended with Jacques Brel’s Ça Va.
