On Sunday night at The Green Door Store, Benjamin Booker broke his UK virginity as he played his first gig on our shores. He will have been pretty pleased with the end result.

After a slow start, Booker upped the tempo and his sometimes shambolic brand of fast-paced DIY blues got the crowd moving.

His Louisiana tongue made it quite difficult to understand the limited chitchat between songs but his voice made up for it. A desperate husky growl resonated throughout the dingy Green Door Store, probably being heard all the way to Brighton Station.

However, the real star of the show was Booker’s drummer Max Norton. Without a bassist, his fast-paced jazz-style drumming held Booker’s frantic lo-fi show together.

The two have obviously been playing together for a long time and their telekinetic onstage relationship was a joy to behold.

In almost Ramones style, Booker and Norton got through their set in breakneck speed and finished after just half an hour.

With his debut album out this summer, those in attendance will have hoped that it was the first of many shows in the UK.
