An audio walk through Stanmer Park on a sunny weekend: it was easy to like Walking Stories.

A group of about 20 people were given mp3 players and headphones and set off on a short stroll through the park on an immersive and interactive audio experience.

Music, poetry, snatches of sound and conversations filled our ears. Children playing, the Shipping Forecast, laughter; at times it was disorientating but never unpleasant. The group set off on the adventure and followed instructions to walk together, gather objects, observe our companions and the space around us and then separate from them and explore alone.

The piece was about journeys, the tracks we make on the earth, how our paths intertwine with others and then diverge.

It was a little like being inside a film. The walkers were the art and without the audience of active listeners there would be no stories. The good people of Brighton walking dogs or jogging through Stanmer that day unknowingly became part of the plot.

Walking Stories provided an interesting 40-minute break from our busy everyday lives. It was a chance to pause and view the park, and perhaps even ourselves, in a completely different way.
