Zombies, alien invasions and deadly infections – well trodden ground which even last year’s Hollywood epic World War Z proved was hard to make work. So writer Faye Woodbridge set herself a difficult task with her second play Infection.
The story is told through two interweaving timelines – one starts when one of the three characters, Dom, is bitten and the other tells of events leading up to that point.
Infection follows Dom, his best female friend Sam and his older brother Will as they attempt to battle against the world – whatever it has become.
The play has some real scare moments which keep the audience on its toes. And by the time inevitable conversations are being had about death there is a touch of emotion, almost a connection with the characters.
But Michael Williams overacts as Will, Dom (Frank McHugh) bears an uncanny resemblance to Outnumbered’s Ben with oddball questions pulling away from the script, and Mattu Mannah seems to struggle to relax into playing Sam. At one point they were even stifling giggles.
A difficult task, not quite pulled off and at points predictable, but with some positive moments along the way.
