Komedia’s fairy lights twinkled a little bit more on Monday night as The Handsome Family charmed the audience with their harmony-laden alt-country.
The married duo of Brett and Rennie Sparks told amusing stories about the inspiration behind songs and then played to stunned silence. The band, formed in Chicago, have been together for 21 years and have just released their tenth album.
Those expecting a set focused on latest album Wilderness would have been mistaken, as the band played a career-spanning set.
The tracks off Singing Bones worked best. The Bottomless Hole was truly haunting and showcased the depth of Brett’s baritone voice.
Fresh from being used as the theme tune for American cop drama True Detective, Far From Any Road transported the audience to a moody spaghetti western.
Unfortunately, it was hard to gauge the crowd’s reaction as they remained rather stoic throughout.
Regardless of the crowd, this family affair was a delight to behold.
