Very few bands at Brighton’s celebration of new music can offer a best of album on their merch table.

But Japan’s Buffalo Daughter can boast of a 21-year career, with the core trio already having seven albums to their name and another on the way on Parisian label Modular.

The live four-piece set-up, driven by the Motorik rhythms of an amazing live drummer, was all about settling into a groove where anything could happen.

Along the way the ever-changing songs found room for girl group harmonies, punky power chords, prog rock, disco euphoria and even from scratching from DJ MoOog Yamamoto, who occasionally wandered away from his decks to create his own portable light show.

Their first set headlining the Japan Rising showcase drew the crowds away from the free sushi table, but at just four songs all seemed over too soon.

It was unsurprising to find a few familiar faces in their second show coming back for more, especially after guitarist suGar Yoshinga’s promised it would contain completely different material.

Mirrorball created a summery atmosphere in the darkness of The Hope, while the closing epic brought to mind the ever-evolving crescendos so beloved of Sigur Ros.

It could be that a career is just beginning in the UK for the Tokyo veterans.
