If there was one word available to describe Rosie Lowe it would be sultry.
The London-by-way-of-Devon singer’s voice has a raspy edge behind its power that is reminiscent of the Sugababes’ Mutya Buena on Overload. Coupled with a shimmering, loop-heavy backing track provided by her band, it completed a package of wonderful late 1990s-informed R’n’B when they got into full tilt.
Lowe’s four-track The Right Thing EP was essentially the subject of the short set in a crowded Komedia Studio Bar. Each track was given full room to breathe, even if recreating the studio sound was somewhat hampered at times by minor technical difficulties.
To see Lowe’s vision fully realised in a large atmospheric venue where her ethereal vocals would realise their full scope would be quite something.
To purely focus on Lowe though is unfair. Her band emanated warmth and talent – offering more than able support to their leader as they tackled the challenge of translating the minimalistic production of Lowe’s recorded work into the live arena.
Making such sparse music while still being entertaining is not always easy, but Lowe and her troupe more than demonstrated over five songs that, given a longer brief, they could provide some serious entertainment.
