The kids giggled with appreciation at comic magician Seska’s silliness during his The McMagicSandwich! show.
His performance in the basement of North African restaurant The Blue Man is aimed at making the kids laugh and so keeping the adults happy.
Seska is a nutty character from the fictional former Russian stronghold Izbekistan with an accent like Sacha Baron-Cohen’s famous comic character Borat. He burst into the room with a stream of endless chatter and lots of energy.
He promised to do a variety of tricks quickly but the magic wasn’t allowed to take centre-space as he kept up his stream of consciousness delivery. His tricks include exploding lightbulbs, card tricks and escapology.
Sadly, the pace of the comic delivery means the magic is too quickly brushed over, leaving no time for tension to be created around the tricks. The character of Seska also needs a little more space to be developed, a few pauses and clearer delivery would allow the audience time to catch breath and enjoy the humour.
As a children’s performer, Seska provides fun entertainment but the show needs to slow down and be a little less frantic to feel like a confident family show.
