The 89th season of Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra has been a tough one, with a lack of funding threatening their future. So it was to much applause that the Orchestra’s musical director, Barry Wordsworth, confirmed that the next season will definitely be going ahead.
This was a special evening for Wordsworth in another way too: it was his 200th performance as principal conductor of the orchestra, a significant and impressive milestone met with a standing ovation from both musicians and fans.
Consisting of three pieces, Bridge’s The Sea – Suite for Orchestra, Liebermann’s Piano Concerto No. 1 and Brahms’ Symphony No. 4 in E Major, the closing concert of the season was fittingly triumphant, with the Brahms piece in particular standing out as rousing, energetic and extremely expressive. Robert Clark’s performance on Liebermann’s concerto was in turn natural and awe-inspiring.
The expertise of Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra makes their performances not only a delight to listen to and watch, but also an integral part of the Dome’s programming. The 90th Anniversary Concert Season has been planned already, starts in October and is available for booking by the general public in August.
