The sense of adulation that welcomed Katy B on stage last night was palpable. Club queen 24-year-old Kathleen Anne Brien didn't hang about, launching straight into some of her biggest hits, including Crying For No Reason, Easy Please Me and Aliyah.
Wearing her signature red locks in a simple curl, the Mercury Prize nominee gave her emotional all to every song, clearly lost in the moment as she sang (and danced along to) a mix of her classics and songs from her new, more sophisticated but equally magnetic album Little Red.
The talented young singer’s hypnotic stage presence, combined with a high energy atmosphere in the intimate Concorde 2 venue, ensured it wasn’t just the walls and floor vibrating along to the heavy bass – with almost every member of the audience singing along to each track. The last song on her new album, Sky’s The Limit, almost lifted the roof.
Katy B first burst on to the scene in 2010 with her haunting, sweeping vocals layered over drum and bass track Katy On A Mission. Straddling so many genres, from electronica to R&B, it’s hardly surprising she has such a wide appeal and this was underlined on her first night of this short tour.
Thankfully she’s touring again in October, and on the evidence of last night’s hair-raising, adrenaline-pumping performance, tickets will undoubtedly sell out. Catch her while you can.
