A typically peculiar vibe surrounded Green Door Store as the increasingly popular Mancunians showed off their unconventional style to a mixed audience on Thursday.

Temple Songs possess an exciting new take on the recent psychedelia revival, impressing many with their combination of dark, screeching guitar solos and simple, poppy melodies. Mysterious introductions burst into life as tracks satisfyingly progressed into melodic choruses. Mind-searing feedback floated around as frontman Jolan Lewis fried the brains of onlookers with distressingly scatty guitar solos.

The lackadaisical nature of Lewis’s playing contrasted hugely with Andrew Richardson’s heavy workload on the drums. Richardson’s tightness was faultless as he brought a whole new level of energy to the show.

The group rarely communicated with their audience, their introverted style creating a gloomy demeanour, portrayed by Lewis as he reluctantly introduced songs behind a greased mop of hair covering the majority of his face. This left the audience feeling somewhat disconnected, dampening much of the show’s initial energy.

The innovative style shown by the four-piece is exciting, as they combined psychedelic tendencies with a perfectly contrasting overall lo-fi sound. However, the band’s passion failed to rub off on the crowd, leaving the performance frustratingly lacking in substance.
