It seems each week another young singer-songwriter appears, trying to make their mark on both the charts and in people’s consciousness.
It may be tempting to file the young American country folk artist Lissie as the next in line flavour of the day, but her performance at Concorde 2 on Monday gave enough vital hints to suggest that she is a unique talent.
While others may be grabbing the headlines for being as outspoken and controversial as possible, Lissie goes about things in a more courteous and relaxed manner.
Her second album, Back To Forever, may have garnered many warm reviews, but it is in the live environment where an artist’s strengths and weaknesses show. Lissie led her backing band through a set that bristled with long-term appeal, one which brought together a selection of solidly constructed pop-inflected country folk gems, such as previous singles Shameless and Where I’m Alone.
It was these songs, coated with emotionally raw vocals, which were the main attraction. At their heart, they are songs steeped in tradition but with a 21st-century shine, much like her performance.
Lissie may have two albums and countless tours under her belt but with hard work and a little luck, there should be many more to come.
