There is no doubt about it Jon “The Reverend” McClure is a quintessential example of a frontman.
The Rev’s charisma oozing and commanding presence was on show for all the very instant he swaggered on to the stage at the Concorde 2.
With a crowd that was feeling some middle-of-the-week sleepiness, McClure took the rather sedate audience as a challenge – constantly goading them to get more involved and to “bounce”.
After kicking off with new-album-opener Detonator, moving into indie-club swinger Bassline and then hitting shout-along classic The State Of Things, by the time the first three songs were done the crowd was hooked.
Confidence from a band that can back it up always adds so much to a show and Reverend And The Makers have it in spades – treating every small backroom show as if it was a sold-out stadium.
Their show came to a climax with Silence Is Talking, before the Rev jumped from the stage and led the crowd, who were still chanting the trumpet refrain, outside for an impromptu beachside show.
McClure climbed up on to the bonnet of a Range Rover and played an acoustic encore – leaving one very unhappy motorist and one very happy crowd.
