Luisa Omielan’s show at Komedia didn’t get off to the greatest of starts. Maybe it was the jet lag she confessed to feeling but there were a succession of false starts.
Omielan’s show is titled and at least superficially structured around the theme of What Would Beyoncé Do?
It’s a great idea that is never fully developed, at its worst simply used as an opportunity for her to perform some Beyoncé-style dancing.
Omielan’s strength is her bravery, prepared to make jokes about her own reproductive organs or speak openly about depression or the attempted suicide of her brother.
However, the material feels underdeveloped and uneven, with the hauntingly raw and matter-of-fact retelling of her brother’s attempted suicide lacking the huge comedy pay-off she surely intended.
Still, it was refreshing to hear jokes about modern relationships told from a female perspective and the observational comedy resonated with the largely female crowd.
If Omielan is to take a leaf from her heroine’s book, then maybe she needs to hone her stagecraft before she can become the world-class performer her refreshingly candid nature could allow her to be.
