We were several years into the future, when a data programme released “insights” – predictions about what would happen to us in the future.

An unusual character called Geo Goynes was developing a mysterious new process and a crack team of experts – five audience members who hadn’t met before – would have to carry out an espionage mission around the streets of Hove, wheedling our way inside houses and local businesses, stealing predictions, waiting in sinister locations to make trade-offs and trying not to get spotted.

So far, so intriguing – the new production from Root Experience promised to blend theatre with immersive storytelling and game-playing through the quiet back alleys around The Old Market.

However, our basic phones and Bluetooth headsets could have used more refinement. It was confusing receiving messages via a fuzzy six-person conference call and when all the headsets lost power, there was no way of getting a hint from our mysterious controller.

At one point, the treasure hunt came to a dead end, with all three teams attempting to use their password in every room of the Lion And Lobster to universal bafflement.

Despite the technical setbacks, the group behind this crowd-funded production are worth looking out for in future.
