The audience at Brighton’s Theatre Royal loved Joseph and knew all the songs, unsurprising since it has been on the stage for many years.

While other musicals might have dated this show, thanks to an up-to-date revamp, feels as fresh as ever. This is largely due to the genius of the score – Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber cannot be bettered.

The audience was in stitches and Joseph – better known as Ian Watkins or H from Steps – plays his character well.

But special praise must go to the King – or Elvis – Luke Jasztal, who is brilliant.

The 11 brothers who sell Joseph to Egyptian slaves – fed up with his boastful dreams – are also wonderful.

The energy and excitement of the performance is palpable and the stars seem to be really enjoying themselves.

People would have to be rather grumpy not to at least raise a smile at Joseph – not least because of the singalong soundtrack.
