While summer took its last breath, it was left to Crocodiles to bring some sparkle to the faded seaside glamour of a Monday evening on the September seafront.

The hipster rock peddled by the San Diegans had enough swagger about them to be more in touch with the louche Californian vibe of their homeland than the kiss-me-quick hats being sold around the corner.

Despite this, the early part of the set was blighted by a mix that left the vocals largely inaudible and lost among the thud of bass and drums.

Although frontman Brandon Welchez’s voice never troubled any ear drums, thankfully the blip proved short-lived. Instead it was boosted to blend in among the wash of guitars that echoed around their psychedelic rock.

Given that the band didn’t make it on stage until after 10.15pm, it was a short set that only really got going by the time the clock had run down.

However, Sleep Forever and the hypnotic Mirrors proved the ideal tunes to unleash at the evening’s peak.

Despite being four albums into their career, Crocodiles still seemed far from the finished article. But there was still enough there to warrant more than a passing listen.
