This musical tribute to Broadway legends John Kander and Fred Ebb caught my attention when it was premiered at the Brighton Fringe in 2011 and second time round it proved to be just as pleasurable.
Melody La Rouge’s tribute to these musical theatre geniuses featured 14 songs from their vast back catalogue. Never ones to shirk dark subjects, they have set their three most popular shows around the rise of Nazism in the decadent nightclubs of Berlin and in prison cells both in Chicago and in South America.
Interspersing the songs, Ms La Rouge provided the background to Kander and Ebb’s work and their relationship with Liza Minnelli, her inspiration and idol.
The programme was a mixture of well-known numbers and a few less familiar. Whilst welcoming most of the artiste’s choice, there were a couple that would not have been on my wish list. The inclusion of I Miss The Music would have added poignancy to the mention of Ebb’s death.
Performing in an intimate venue did not stop the chanteuse from pulling all the emotional stops out for the big numbers. The intimacy added to her exquisite delivery of the ballads, Isn’t This Better and A Quiet Thing.
