The Brighton Beach Boys are well established locally and as a result can often be taken for granted. They shouldn’t be.
It may seem like an easy job to belt out classic after classic to an adoring audience – but it isn’t.
As well as the fiendishly difficult highs of Brian Wilson’s vocals, the 18-piece band had to tackle complex multi-instrument numbers such as Strawberry Fields Forever.
All this made their show, Pet Sounds Versus Sgt Pepper, the more impressive and enjoyable.
The first half of the show saw them run through the 1966 classic Beach Boys album.
It’s easy to forget how majestic Hove’s All Saints church is but with the last of the evening’s sunlight pouring in through the stained-glass windows to the sound of Sloop John B, nobody in the audience would be forgetting any time soon.
After a short interlude, the band returned to run through the 1967 Beatles album.
From the arm-swaying chorus of With A Little Help from My Friends to the toe-tapping A Day In The Life, the audience lapped up every second.
The encore saw them stray away from the two classic albums to play Penny Lane, Strawberry Fields Forever, Good Vibrations and All You Need Is Love. It doesn’t get much better than that.
