Despite having only recorded 12 episodes, the japes of Basil Fawlty, his wife Sybil and hapless waiter Manuel in Fawlty Towers have been quoteable favourites of comedy fans since their original broadcast in the 1970s. The Faulty Towers Dining Experience is a show that continues to make the characters relevant, entertaining diners during a three-course, two-hour meal with memorable characters and full immersion into the show. With actors clambering on and under tables, the interactivity could have seemed invasive but due to a light-hearted, skillful delivery, it didn’t.
On this particular night, an additional level of tension and drama was added by a couple at one of the tables having a furious (and barely disguised) argument. Whether or not this was part of the performance was the subject of some hushed debate, but when they finally stormed out to a round of applause, abandoning the main course, it was clear they weren’t. Though their antics were vaguely distracting, the actors’ response was professional and witty and, if anything, made the show even more unpredictably entertaining.
Surprisingly, most of the diners were far too young to have been alive when the original shows were broadcast, but whether you’re a committed fan or a casual observer, the Faulty Towers Dining Experience is deliciously fun.
