There can be few better ways to soak up some real local history than a gentle stroll along the prom with Ric Morris on his Piers And Queers walking tour. His friendly, relaxed style is instantly engaging and he clearly knows his stuff.
Starting at the iconic West Pier, the meandering walk takes just shy of 90 minutes. Ric intertwines facts about Brighton's homosexual roots - it was once more Army camp than tourist town, with many an underpaid soldier “going scarlet” to earn some extra cash - with a myriad of gender-bending characters that have touched on and been influenced by Brighton over the years.
The tour throws a spotlight on some of the fabulously colourful personalities - both famous and not so famous – who have left an enduring mark on gay culture, gender stereotypes and today's society. It certainly leaves you wanting to know more about them.
Both Brighton residents and tourists alike will find this well worth the walk. Ric also runs a sister tour called Only In Brighton which celebrates some of the city's peculiarities. I for one am looking forward to finding out more.
