In The Dark is a project whose aim is to rethink spoken word radio and introduce it into new settings.

The premise of a live radio show set in one of Brighton’s oldest churches was certainly an intriguing proposition.

The tiny St Peter’s Church in Preston Park is often overlooked for its better-known namesake on The Level. Dating back to the 13th century, its interior is delightful and the walls are still decorated with the original murals.

The interest created in the show by the venue however was short-lived once the recordings began.

Based on a theme of loss, the recorded snippets were taken from a variety of sources and compiled especially for the broadcast.

Only a piece about a conversation between an automated train information line and a mumbling punter and a similar interaction with a ‘Relationship Replacement Hotline’ provided any light relief.

The other recordings resembled a dull hour on Radio 4 and seemed to have more of a nautical connection than anything to do with loss. An especially dragging piece called The Captain was memorable only for its tedium and summed up the show.

It represented a missed opportunity to have done something special, rather than just being bored in a nice church for an hour.
