Hailed as the new Grimes, MØ is undoubtedly one of the front-runners in the ever-expanding genre of powerful electro-pop. The alias of Copenhagen-born Karen Marie Ørsted, MØ,more than lived up to the comparisons with her intuitive brand of Scandi-pop.
Playing in the sweaty confines of Digital, she used eye-catching moves, energy and songs to distract the audience from the venue’s less-than-appealing smell. Singles Pilgrim and Maiden, as different as they are, were the standout tracks from the set. Pilgrim, sped up live, was heavy with hand-claps, brass and soulful synths as Karen yelped “Hey! Yo! Holla, Holla, Holla!” to rouse the crowd. Maiden was equally impressive in displaying her versatility. The song’s beautiful lilting guitar line played along to her sultry vocals reminiscent of Lana Del Rey.
The fidgeting monochrome projection behind her displayed swing dancers and vintage footage of horn-players. But it was Karen herself who stole the limelight. She effortlessly commanded the jostling crowd’s attention by bounding around on stage. She punched the air during euphoric choruses, shook her shoulders for the melodies, and sang intensely. Her frenetic energy was irresistible.
She need not worry about the comparisons to Grimes, she has carved out her own joyful niche.
