Although she has only released two songs, Farao is swiftly gathering attention. She has a unique, otherworldly voice, which sets her apart from many singer-songwriters. It’s no wonder that the project of Norwegian songstress, Kari Jahnsen, is beginning to be noticed by music blogs ahead of the release of her first EP.
The first single from the EP, Skin, was played powerfully and slowly by Jahnsen and her band. The gentle melody and quietly haunting vocals were fitting for St Bartholomew’s Church even if the subject matter, a marital affair, was perhaps not.
Her voice was certainly helped by the venue’s acoustics. In fact, it was probably the setting that made the performance particularly memorable. The richness of the church’s fittings underscored the gig’s hypnotic charm. It was hardly a surprise that the keyboardist declared it to be the best venue she has played in.
A laid-back and melancholy haze was created by closing track Forces. Fingerpicked guitar and hushed, shuffling drums drove the song along while Farao’s light honey-toned vocal lilted with bittersweet sadness. There was much to take in. Hopefully the EP will demonstrate, as this set did, her vocal talents.
