Video may have killed the radio star but for Zachary Oberzan, his collection of homemade tapes provided the basis for a deep and thought-provoking piece of theatre.
Entirely autobiographical in material, Your Brother, Remember? explored the bond between siblings and how it changes over time.
For Zachary and his brother Gator, growing up in rural America with divorced parents, the video camera provided the only escape from their dull teenage lives.
Acting out extracts from Jean Claude Van Damme’s Kickboxer, the pair created their own version of the martial arts movie.
Twenty years on, Zach revisited the clips and filmed them again in the same locations.
With both cleverly interspersed on a screen, the result is an amusing take on what time does to people and relationships.
For the Oberzans, this seemingly harmless bit of teenage fun provided the basis for both brother’s lives.
But while one ended up on stage, the other self-destructed and ended up in prison.
The result was something mesmeric and modern in thought and concept: a real reflection on what family means and how humans evolve over time; some for better, some for the worse.
