There are very few live performers similar to How To Dress Well. The project of Colorado native Tom Krell is both immeasurably sad and undeniably beautiful and haunting.

It’s hard to escape the fact that death and loss is at the forefront of his performance.

Krell’s extraordinary falsetto on Set It Right was a roll call of all those he missed in his life, his voice breaking a thick wall of droning sound to become audible as his symphonic list longed for family and friends who suffer from depression, who are absent from his life, or who have died.

Krell constantly teased the audience, creating an almost overwhelmingly intimate atmosphere.

His performance of single & It Was U used harmonies provided by a pair of micro-phones, one altered to provide echo. This created an easy rhythmic lilt to showcase his range of vocal capabilities.

He completed his set with a devastating song about his brother Blue. Singing entirely a capella, he captivated the audience as he lamented his sibling’s depression and pain.

And yet the show was inescapably uplifting, leaving the audience delighted. They had seen a hugely talented young artist sing at the smallest of venues, the Brighthelm Centre. Bigger things are destined.
