This was Mac Demarco’s warm-up gig for his later performance at the Green Door Store and, initially, it certainly had that feel.

Being first on stage for the Corn Exchange’s evening session, the crowd took a while to file into the venue. And it was a few numbers before Demarco and his band got into their groove, seemingly drifting through the first few tracks. This is not to say their songs were bad, they just lacked depth.

However, once their jangly skate punk began to seep through they hit their stride, Demarco showing off his smooth voice and letting it waft around the Corn Exchange’s airy alcoves.

Clicking into gear as the set neared its conclusion, Demarco and his dead-pan rhythm guitarist began enjoying themselves, trading riffs and goading the bassist into some powerful support vocals.

It soon became apparent why Demarco has received so much hype in the indie press. By the set’s end, he was playfully fiddling with the amps, altering the sound to give it an experimental, garage element and clambering into the crowd to deliver the last chorus of Together.

As undoubtedly his strongest song, Together forged a rousing conclusion and ensured the crowd left satisfied.
