A heaving crowd at The Festival Hub settled in for one of The Great Escape’s opening gigs from We Were Evergreen. Sunglasses on and beer in hand, the festival had certainly started in spirit.

The Parisian band’s set was apt for a balmy, bright afternoon. The trio’s music evokes summer and their lo-fi pop sound drew in passer-bys with softly sung harmonies, ukuleles, guitars and a glockenspiel.

We Were Evergreen’s music was inescapably sweet and twee, their unison of voices intimate, rather than raucous or passionate.

Lead singer, Michael Liot, harmonised with female vocalist (and glockenspiel star) Fabienne Débarre to create sunshine melodies.

The trio met at the Conservatoire de Musique in Paris and have, ever since, been intent on making folksy, rhythmic pops songs. They toured, after all, with Michael Kinwanuka and Ed Sheeran.

They managed to avoid the worst caricatures of bland, saccharine pop with on-stage exuberance.

New song Quick Sand raised the tempo so that by their final number, the threesome were each frenetically drumming with childlike abandon. In turn the crowd gently bopped along.

It was not just the sunshine that left everyone in a joyful mood by the end of the gig.
