The three stars of the 1958 Billy Wilder classic Some Like It Hot are recreated in this quirky musical comedy in a pre-heaven location, where newly deceased fans of the film get to meet their heroes before completely passing on to “the other side”.

Some Like It Hotter does not quite live up to its billing as a fast-moving, razor-sharp comedy but there are several compensations, including the reincarnation of Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon performing sizzling musical numbers.

Sarah Applewood gives a marvellous Monroe impersonation as she brilliantly sings show-stoppers Runnin’ Wild and I Wanna Be Loved By You – and she plays a pretty mean clarinet. Applewood oozes sex appeal to capture Marilyn’s breathy voice, giggle, pout and wiggle.

The whole cast of six play musical instruments, and the vocals of Paul Matania, as Hollywood heart-throb Curtis, and Daniel Lloyd, as funny man Lemmon, are excellent.

Patrick Bridgman also excels as Charlie, delighted to become part of the movie that he has watched since he was ten years old. To him, Marilyn is a mother figure.

Richard Hurford’s complex, sometimes confusing, fantasy adventure takes time to warm up but then gets really hot.
