AN ART and sound exhibition is launching this week to raise money for a mental health charity.

University of Sussex students are running an "immersive" showcase of work to raise money for Artspace.

Phoebe Morgan and Guy Purbrick, both art history students, curated the Mind the Gap exhibition to highlight the link between mental health and art.

The show will open at the Green Door Store, Trafalgar Arches, Brighton on Wednesday August 18 for a private viewing and is open to the public on Thursday August 19.

The organisers said: "We see the importance, especially in light of the pandemic's disastrous well-being impact, in forming a space of understanding that intends to inform and educate others about mental health problems to de-stigmatise them creatively."

They hope the event will bring families, friends and the public together.

The event features artwork exploring mental health in the last 18 months of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Argus:

Work from 20 different artists will be featured, including Brighton-based artists, creators from Artspace and others from around the country.

Artists have spent ten months creating work in a range of different mediums such as paintings, short films, photography and textiles.

Each piece is centred around the central theme of mental health and inner workings of the mind.

The Argus:

All the works will be available to purchase alongside zines, prints and other merchandise, with most of the proceeds donated to charity.

The exhibit will also feature a live sound installation created by Sholto Wilson, co-founder of Brighton's Accidental Meetings record label, and local DJ Felix Delano.

The Argus:

Artspace Brighton is an art and mental health charity that aims to provide a community based studio for people with experience of mental health problems.

It hopes to create a safe and supportive environment for its members to pursue their interests in art.

Volunteers and members work together and share experiences and ideas, the studio is located in Bristol Estate, East Brighton and takes referrals from the Brighton and Hove area.

The show is sponsored by Dr Jeff Amos at The Clinic, a mercury-free dental practice, who is an avid collector of modern art.

Admission to the exhibition is free but any donations are encouraged.
