I was saddened to hear of the death of Sheila Schaffer (The Argus, January 4). I remember working with her when she was on Brighton Council.
She was a person who stuck to her principles no matter what.
She was passionate about the environment and ultimately lost her position as vice-chair of the Environment Committee because she refused to bow to political pressure and support an out-of-town superstore at Patcham Court Farm. She also opposed the sell-off of Brighton’s downland. As a Labour councillor she was “green” before most people had heard of the Green Party.
She also fought long and hard for the creation of the South Downs National Park, and at least had the pleasure of seeing it become a reality.
The people of Brighton have lost a great friend. Her passion, commitment and modesty were an inspiration.
