DJ Dynamite Sal's ever-popular night celebrates its sixth birthday with a "We Luv You" theme, which means they will be taking requests all night.
"We Luv Pop started life back in February 2002 and had been something I'd wanted to do for a long time. I'd always had an idea to put on a night that celebrated the diversity of pop music and could feature tributes to either specific artists or themes," says Sal. "There were lots of those compilation albums around at the time, such as I Luv The Seventies or Eighties, so that was kind of the inspiration but I changed it to 'We' because that sounded much more inclusive and suggested that everyone at the night would be involved.
"The Hanbury Ballroom was the perfect venue. It was a bit like a school disco rather than a nightclub and had the magic ingredient which was a giant video wall."
Sal roped in some old friends, including DJ A-Dam, who has since started up the excellent FTPA nights, and DJ Debs, another former Dynamite Boogaloo warm-up and "a good calming influence". Jez was given responsibility for the video wall and started putting together images of all their favourite pop moments.
"The thing was, would anyone get it?" says Sal.
Her fears were groundless and the night has gone from strength to strength ever since. Themes so far have included Madonna (on three occasions), Kylie ("we're looking forward to Kylie's comeback so we can give her a third"), bling bling, one-hit wonders and pop camp.
"I'm not sure if we'll be doing another We Luv Michael Jackson," Sal explains. "We did a while back and lots of people turned up with babies Ð not real ones Ð to throw around after the baby on the balcony incident."
When the Hanbury changed ownership and became a members-only venue, the night moved to the Sussex Arts Club.
"Our final fling at the Hanbury was a hugely emotional and memorable night. Well, until I passed out," she continues.
Thankfully, the Hanbury dropped its members-only policy and We LuvÉ returned to its natural home last October.
The video wall and the Sparklemotion Dance Troupe will be on display, and the bar will be open for pre-club drinks. Early arrival is strongly recommended.
