Gus Poyet has told some of his Albion players they will find it hard to get a game next season.
But the Seagulls boss is adamant they will be handed a fair chance to impress him all the time they pledge their commitment to the club.
Albion are back in serious training this week and Poyet wants his men to be clear on their chances of featuring in the Championship.
Their boss has resisted any clichés about everyone starting again at zero on their return to work.
Competition for places will hot up further with Albion putting the finishing touches to at least one signing.
Poyet said: “Without talking about individuals, everybody knows where they stand in the squad.
“The players who have more chance of playing, they know that.
“The players who have got less chance of playing, they know that.
“We are honest with the players. No one has any doubts.
“Then decisions have to be made by the players and we will deal with that.
“At the end of the day all the players who are with us are under contract. And if they are under contract they have a chance.”
Albion are currently training without unsettled playmaker Vicente, who has stayed in Spain despite being under contract.
Poyet added: “Everybody here knows how we respect their contracts.
“I cannot tell you one thing about Vicente and then do the opposite ourselves.
“We are a very common sense club so we respect the contract all the time you are professional and you push for the club in the right direction.”
