Albion have been told they are getting a player who is perfect for the football Gus Poyet preaches.

Lewes youngster Solly March, 17, is expected to join the Seagulls on a three-year deal, the first two as a scholar.

The left-sided midfielder has made one first team appearance for the Rooks but has shone in their exciting youth team this season.

His form attracted the attention of a host of clubs with Newcastle offering him a trial, Millwall making a firm offer while Sunderland, Arsenal and West Ham were all showing interest.

But March has decided to join the club where his father, Steve, was an apprentice in the late 1980s.

Lewes boss Steven King said: “The first time I saw Solly I knew he would make it.

“He could have gone to higher and bigger clubs. I don’t mean that disrespectfully to Brighton but Newcastle, Sunderland and one or two other Premier League clubs were interested.

“He probably wanted to stay local and be nearer his family.

“Brighton are a Championship club now. They play good football, the manager wants to play the right way and Solly is a footballer so it is perfect for him to go to a club who want to play football.

“He is technically very good. He has bags of energy, is a box-to-box player, has a good left foot, a good shot, he sees things early and the weight of his passes is very good.”
