I have believed for many years that a new pier for Brighton and Hove should be exactly that: new.
We already have one of the finest examples in the world of a traditional seaside pier. A new pier should reflect the city’s faith in the future, a legacy which will stand the test of time.
So, what of the future? Well, I love the idea of the i360 – the bold futuristic design. What I don’t like is Brighton and Hove City Council’s desperate attempt to aid its funding. If the i360 is commercially viable, private funding shouldn’t be a problem.
But let’s not dismiss the idea and design – look at a more sustainable and practical approach.
First and foremost, our leaders need to take ownership of this issue, which I can’t remember them ever doing, not by mistakenly helping private operators realise the project by bailing them out financially but by project-managing the debate. We, the citizens, need to actively support the debate.
Let’s look at the site. By going out to sea there are limited planning issues. Our city leaders need to actively market this plot of sea to interested developers. And all we want in return is an agreed rent (money for nothing) and, most importantly, a world class design.
I have lots of ideas concerning the look of it and the facilities on offer but those are for another day.
Now, to our city leaders, it’s over to you. And if you want our help, just ask.
