Few areas in Brighton have changed as much during the last century as Black Rock, where the Downs meet the sea This picture, probably taken in the Edwardian era, shows crumbling cliffs above the dark-coloured pebbles that some say gave the area its name.
There were regular landslides with several buildings slipping into the sea and it was a bleak lonely spot. Roedean School can be seen in the distance.
A swimming pool was built at Black Rock during the 1930s but it was demolished in 1978 after safety concerns.
In 1970 work started on Brighton Marina, which now covers much of the site. The 126-acre harbour is one of the largest in Europe.
