A group of campaigners climbed on to the roof of a petrol station during a rush hour protest.
About 25 members of the Rossport Solidarity Group staged the protest at the Shell petrol station in Preston Road, Brighton, at 5pm last night.
Protesters turned off the pumps at the emergency switches and five of the campaigners climbed on to the forecourt canopy. Lucy Davis, spokeswoman for the Rossport Solidarity Group, said: "It has been good natured. The police came along to make sure the people on the roof were safe.
"We wanted to be here during rushhour.
We have been handing out information to people passing by and have had a lot of support."
The action was part of a nationwide protest against oil giant Shell's plans to build a petrol pipeline through the Irish village of Rossport.
A spokesman for Brighton Police said: "We were not told about this in advance.
Managers at the petrol station took the decision to shut. There were no arrests and no one was injured."
Nobody from Shell was available for comment.
