Confident little Lucas Whisker almost upstaged the Queen today by demanding a flower she had been handed during a day of cultural engagements at the seaside.

The two-year-old patiently waited alongside his mother, Clare Milner-Smith, and seven-month-old sister, Almaza, for the Monarch to emerge from the £8 million Jubilee Library in Brighton.

But the sight of the Queen being handed scores of brightly-coloured flowers by Royal wellwishers left young Lucas wanting a slice of the attention.

As the Queen reached Lucas in the line, he promptly held out his hand - and to his delight the smiling Monarch obliged by placing a pink tulip given to her by a young girl into his outstretched palm.

According to Ms Milner-Smith, 34, from Seven Dials, Brighton, Lucas has always been a confident and outgoing youngster from the moment he was born.

She said: "He has always been an outgoing and confident child even as a young baby. In fact, he was talking by the time he was 10 months old.

"He had been very excited about meeting the Queen and he knew how special she was because he had read about her in the BFG children's book.

"When I told him he was meeting the Queen, he was really happy.

"Obviously he saw the Queen receiving all these flowers and he decided he wanted one.

"The Queen was obviously pleased to give him one of her flowers and Lucas was delighted. He had a really enjoyable day."
