Fans at Fatboy Slim’s upcoming stadium gig have been warned to expect home-time queues as “safety concerns” close a train station.

Up to 23,000 people will pack the American Express Community Stadium on each of the two Big Beach Bootique concerts next month.

Rail bosses and police have decided to close Falmer Station from 10pm because there will not be enough trains to ferry gig-goers and warned the station could become “dangerously overcrowded”.

Southern, which consulted with police on the decision, said it could not run an enhanced service because of Diamond Jubilee weekend events and the Epsom Derby.

However, gig organisers said there would be “ample transport”.

Passengers will be able to get off the train at Falmer after 10pm but no one will be allowed on.

Brighton and Hove Bus and Coach Company will put on up to 40 extra buses to get people back into the city centre.

A park and ride service will also run from Mill Road.

A Southern spokeswoman said there were “real concerns” the station could become “dangerously overcrowded”.

She said: “We are unable to provide the additional train services that we would normally for a match day and as a result we would not be able to safely deal with the number of concert-goers expected to exit the arena and take the train.

"All of our trains will be used for events relating to the Diamond Jubilee weekend.

“We have a good relationship with the stadium, but all parties have agreed that on this occasion this is the best and safest course of action.”

Inspector Gary Ancell said on match days there would be up to 15 additional and longer trains.

He said: “There are about five trains running after 10.30pm and that is not enough to move serious numbers of people.

“If it is not closed we risk having 2,000 people at Falmer trying to get to Brighton.”

Roger French, managing director of the bus company, said: “Maybe people will have to wait a bit longer but we will do our best.”

Stephen Flannery from the gig’s organisers Anglo said: “We have worked extremely closely with all travel partners to ensure adequate transport to and from the events is in place.

“We are laying on an extra 40 buses to take ticketholders free of charge from the centre of Brighton to the stadium and back again plus a comprehensive park and ride scheme.”

Southern tickets will be accepted on the 25, 28 and 29 buses.
