Shocked onlookers may have thought they were watching a scene from BBC comedy Little Britain when a man leapt out of his wheelchair and punched another man repeatedly.

Witnesses told police the two men were arguing before the wheelchair-bound man suddenly got up and attacked the other.

People from the nearby Hobgoblin pub, in York Place, rushed over and tended to the victim’s bloody face whilst the suspect left the area.

Police officers rushed to the scene and arrested the assailant before he could speed away to safety.

A 36-year-old Brighton man has been arrested on suspicion of assault and has been bailed until 10 March.

Police are trying to identify the victim who was assaulted in St Peter’s Place, Brighton, at 7.50pm on February 21.

DC Barrie Southerden said: “Officers responded quickly to the report and arrested a man nearby before going to the scene to speak to the victim but he had left.

"I have issued a CCTV image of the injured man in an effort to trace him.

“Members of the public rushed to his aid. I would like this injured man to come forward, or anyone who knows him to get in touch.

“He is described as about 5ft tall, with fair hair, wearing a grey coat.

“We are also keen to identify the woman who helped to treat his wounds and any other witnesses.

“If you were there, or if you recognise the victim or those who went to his assistance please contact detectives on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.”
