Celebrity Big Brother star Sally Bercow says she would consider running to become an MP for Brighton.
The Labour Party-supporting wife of the Commons Speaker, John Bercow, said it would be “brilliant” to represent the city at Westminster.
Despite her party loyalties, Mrs Bercow said she hoped Caroline Lucas retained her seat in Brighton Pavilion, saying she would not run against the Green leader.
But she said Brighton Kemptown would be her number one choice were she to decide to run for Parliament.
Speaking to The Argus, Mrs Bercow said she wasn’t sure whether the party hierarchy would approve her candidature.
She said: “I would certainly consider it, but I do feel that to be honest, it would be a rare Labour selection committee that would take me on.
“Brighton could be one, because I don’t think that they are into identikit politicians.”
Mrs Bercow pointed to boundary changes that could make Brighton Kemptown a tougher seat for Labour, saying it had been “hacked about”.
Two new constituencies, Lewes and Brighton East, and Uckfield are being created.
Even with no intervention from Mrs Bercow, the Boundary Commission proposals throw open the possibility of a tantalising battle between coalition partners.
Simon Kirby, Brighton Kemptown's serving MP, said: “ It would certainly make the election interesting.
"If the boundary changes go through I could be standing against Norman Baker as well.”
Simon Burgess, former Labour candidate for Brighton Kemptown, said: “I won't be seeking selection for the Kemptown constituency again but I am obviously keen to see a strong selection from Labour.
"Sally Bercow is a very interesting and high profile figure who has said in the past how much she loves Brighton. If she was chosen I think she would give Simon Kirby a good run for his money.”
