It is a mystery which has puzzled readers of The Argus for years.
There have been numerous sightings of big cats across Sussex, including in areas of Brighton and Hove.
Now a filmmaker has unveiled plans to make a movie based on the Beast of Bevendean.
Ewan Gorman was inspired by a 2008 article in The Argus.
A trailer has been shot and there are hopes the film, which will be about an hour and 40 minutes long, will be aired nationwide.
Mr Gorman said he became fascinated with the creature.
The 40-year-old, who teaches at the Brighton Film School and lives in St Richard’s Road, Portslade, said: “I’ve made short films before and I really wanted to make a feature film.
“The inspiration was The Argus. I was reading an article about this big cat – the Beast of Bevendean.
“I thought, ‘What would happen if two boys went out and looked for such a cat?’ And that was the inspiration for the story.”
