Scientists are to launch a study into whether the Newhaven incinerator could cause a surge in baby deaths and cancers.

A team of researchers from Imperial College London has been asked by the Health Protection Agency to carry out an investigation into facilities like the one under construction in Sussex.

It follows continuing public concerns that incinerators are linked to cancer and higher than average death rates among babies and children.

Retired GP Dick Van Steenis, a leading campaigner about the potential dangers of incinerators, said people within 15 miles could be affected - meaning everyone from Shoreham to Eastbourne along the coast would be at risk.

Government health officials have always insisted modern incinerators do not pose significant health risks.
