Albion fans have been warned the club could be punished if there are more pitch invasions for the final two games at the Withdean.

Manager Gus Poyet has also warned fans not to take home mementos of the ground, which will still be used for reserve and youth matches next year.

The Football Association has already written to the club after fans flooded onto the pitch after the promotion-clinching Dagenham and Redbridge victory on April 12, and there is a chance there will be a “hefty” fine.

Poyet, writing in the match programme for today’s (Saturday) clash with Southampton, said: “I ask that you do not ignore it this time. I ask that you stay off the pitch out of respect for the players, my staff and me.

“I am not a fan of pitch invasions, and I hope that we can all celebrate together today and against Huddersfield next week for our last game here.

“Please do not jeopardise the presentation of the trophy, which will be made after the match next week.”

He also warned fans not to remove any souvenirs from the ground or rip up the pitch as the club would be left to foot the bill.

He said: “We want to use Withdean for our reserve and youth matches next year so please do not try to remove souvenirs from the stadium. We’ve achieved so much this season, so let’s not spoil it with a negative end.”

Managing director Ken Brown said: “We face the very real possibility of an FA charge, which could bring a hefty fine for the club and further sanctions.

“We do not want fans coming on the pitch at all. Fans may feel it is all good natured but by coming on against Dagenham and on Saturday at Walsall we now have to give the authorities an explanation and face the prospect of being charged by the FA.

“As a result we are now also under very close scrutiny from the authorities so I implore all supporters to stay in the stands for our last four games, as any invasion is likely to lead to the club facing a heavy fine and possibly a more serious punishment.”

Seagulls fans posting on online forums said they were unlikely to join in any more pitch invasions.

Scotty Mac said: “The other two were justified for what was achieved in the games.

“Any pitch invasions from now onwards are just pointless – tomorrow in particular, and I for one will be back to leaving five minutes before the end in order to get a bus back into town.”
