This huge tree appears to have started sprouting something extremely unusual.

Scores of shoes – mainly trainers – have been hurled into the branches of this large tree at The Level in Brighton.

The colourful items bring a touch of colour to the bare tree but have left passers-by slightly confused.

Many have been flocking to take a look with some taking pictures of its unique fruit.

The Argus visited the area to ask people if they knew why the trainers were in the tree.

Nick Askew, a music student from Hanover, believes it is the work of skateboarders who had worn down their shoes but did not like the finality of throwing them away.

He said: “I am a skateboarder and your shoes do get messed up. So maybe that’s it. Maybe people throw their old shoes into the air.”

Phil Yeoman, 43, and his wife Katherine, 39, of Hanover, said they believed it was artwork.

Mrs Yeoman said: “There is a lot of graffiti art in Brighton so maybe it is linked to that.

“But saying that it could be a memorial to someone. Perhaps to a skater because the shoes are very near to the skate park.”
