The A283 near the derelict Shoreham cement works was closed for more than four hours this morning after a man lost control of his sports car on a bend.
The man, who has not yet been named, is believed to have been driving a two-seater Caterham Seven racing car when it collided with a parked Land Rover at around 7am.
The sports car left the road and went into bushes between the Shoreham and Upper Beeding exits.
Police and paramedics were called but the driver was declared dead at the scene.
His female passenger suffered serious injuries and is in the Royal Sussex County Hospital.
