Marc Rendall was the FA Cup hero as Hassocks progressed to the third qualifying round with victory over Ryman League division one side Bromley.

The midfielder scored in the 71st minute, then headed off his own line moments later to preserve Hassocks' slender advantage.

Full-back Steve Wilkins secured victory for the County League side with a stoppage-time header to spark celebrations from a vociferous 273 crowd at the Beacon.

Rendall said: "The crowd were fantastic. Playing in front of that many people gives you a lift, the atmosphere was great and it made a big difference.

"The president put a few quid behind the bar and I am relieved to have scored because the goal made up for a chance I missed earlier.

"When I cleared off the line it was really just a case of being in the right place at the right time. Everyone gave 100 per cent, it was a big game for the club and the boys are delighted to have won."

The win has earned Hassocks £7,500 which will go towards building a new stand.

Manager Dave John said: "Financially it is good for the club and we now have a chance of drawing a Conference team in the next round.

"It was a battle. I don't think they were any better than us to be honest. We didn't get many shots on target but we made them count. That's all you have to do.

"Our goalkeeper was excellent and the side played well. It was a team effort. We don't have any individuals in our team, but if we play together we always have a fair chance. We knew if we played our quick game we would wear them down."

So it proved. Hassocks rode their luck before they opened the scoring. Bromley's Ryan Briggs hit the bar with a 25-yard curler in the 38th minute and the Lilywhites' skipper Dean Forbes headed a corner against Joel Harding's back post after the interval.

Rendall then wasted the home team's first chance when Danny Harwood, in the visitors' goal, smothered his effort. But the Hassocks No.7 redeemed himself when he broke the deadlock after Mickey Turner swung over a cross and Rendall netted.

Then the game burst into life. Rendall headed off his own line after a Bromley corner and substitute Famie Stewart flashed a volley inches wide for the visitors.

Bromley threw men forward in growing desperation, but Wilkins rose to majestically head in the second goal for Hassocks to put his side one game away from a place in the first round proper of the famous old cup competition.

Horsham, from Ryman division two, came back from a half-time deficit Bracknell Town to win 3-1.

Bracknell, from division three, edged the first half playing down the Larges Lane slope and took the lead seven minutes before the break when veteran striker Justin Day fired into the far corner despite being pushed out to a wide angle by centre-half Eddie French.

Within two minutes of the re-start, the Hornets were level. Marcel Dennis anticipated a long clearance sailing over the heads of the Bracknell defence and calmly slotted the ball past goalkeeper Martin Hutt from 16 yards.

Eight minutes later a Steve Flain corner led to a melee in the home penalty area and John Kirby stabbed the ball into the goal through a forest of legs.

Dennis sealed the win in the 76th minute when he broke through on the right and squeezed the ball past Hutt from a tight angle.

Hornets manager John Maggs was delighted.

He said: "At half-time I couldn't see us losing and once we had scored there was only one team going to win it.

"In the end it could have been five. I'm very pleased."

Lewes will replay tomorrow after being held to a goalless draw by Wessex League side Gosport.

The Rooks, from the Ryman division two, dominated but found the defensive-minded visitors difficult to break down.

Chris Dicker was just over with a 25-yard free-kick after 20 minutes and Marc Cable had a header cleared off the line by Jason Mann ten minutes before the interval. Dominic Shepherd squandered opportunities in the 64th and 71st minutes when he shot at goalkeeper Mark Brown.

Rooks goalkeeper Ross Standen saved a header from former Bognor striker Neil Scammell on ten minutes and Gosport's Jon Wallsgrove headed wide at the near post 15 minutes from time.

St Leonards will have to return to Rotherhithe tomorrow (7.45pm) after their tie against Fisher Athletic was abandoned due to a waterlogged pitch.

A half-time thunderstorm accompanied by prolonged torrential rain reduced the Surrey Docks Stadium to a quagmire and after just four minutes of a delayed second half Surrey referee John Beadle called a halt.

The game had started in bright sunshine and, while chances were created both ends, Fisher looked the more threatening. The home side broke the deadlock on 35 minutes when John Mighty connected with a Tostao Knashi's cross to crash the ball home from eight yards Saints, from the Dr Martens eastern division, equalised within five minutes as Dominic Barclay flicked a pass into the path of Simon Fox who drew the goalkeeper before slipping the ball past him into an empty net.

On the stroke of half-time, Fisher restored their lead when Tony Dolby scored from the penalty spot after Sean Campbell's clumsy challenge brought down Mighty.
