5pm A quick straw poll on Twitter suggests that while most roads in and near the city centre are now passable, pavements remain treacherous almost everywhere - and many side roads in outlying areas are also still iced up.
Johnny Surtees says: "Howard Terrace (in Seven Dials) is still a total nightmare and a few of the streets around the Seven Dials are well dodgy."
Natalie says: "Everyone here is walking in the road! but must say, I am impressed with City Centre - no sight of snow on ground.
4.45pm More updates from Brighton and Hove City Council:
Due to adverse weather conditions, the Undercliff Walk is currently closed behind the Marina and on the access road leading down from Roedean Café.
Pedestrian access around the closed section is through the Marina along the signed route.
All indoor council leisure facilities are now operating according to normal opening hours.
Hollingbury Park and Waterhall golf courses remain closed due to the adverse weather conditions
1.30pm The council is now concentrating hand gritting around schools using information from the Children and Young People’s Trust. A plough has been deployed to clearing snow drifts at Falmer and Bexhill Road.
And there are now three crews out collecting household waste.
12.05pm More updates from Brighton and Hove City Council:
The council’s adult social care services are working to bring services up to normal but delays can be expected as some staff are having to walk in to work and there are difficulties reaching some vulnerable residents in certain areas
Learning Disability Day Services are all open today – though we are still not able to provide a full transport service to some out-lying areas. We are arranging collection points on main roads where safe to do so
Most children’s centres are open but offering a reduced service – the council is advising parents to ring ahead if they are unsure
Disability services, the Family Information Service, the Ru-ok substance misuse service, the Youth Offending Service and Fostering and Adoption Service are all open Libraries: Hangleton and Portslade open as usual until 1pm; the Mobile Library has gone out; Hove open as usual 1.30-5.30pm; Coldean, Hollingbury, Woodingdean and Rottingdean open until 4pm
Mile Oak will not be open (Moulsecoomb, Patcham, Saltdean, Westdene and Whitehawk are not due to open on Mondays)
Customers are advised to telephone their library before setting out
12noon The council has more on refuse collection:
Limited refuse and recycling services began this morning from roads where it is safe to do so. However, some side-roads are icy and for safety reasons, collections will be delayed.
As conditions permit, evening and Saturday collections will be introduced to clear the backlog and additional drivers and vehicles are being drafted in. Residents are advised to put rubbish and recycling out on their usual day and leave it out.
A spokesman said: “We’re asking residents to bear with us and thank them for their patience. We’ll be throwing everything at the clear-up as the ice thaws and we’ll be working as fast as we can to clear the backlog.”
11.40 am Brighton and Hove Council says a limited refuse collection will be starting again today. It will be releasing more information later in the day.
Yesterday, its severe weather update page said: "Refuse, recycling and street cleaning services remain suspended over the weekend and that could continue into next week - but we have been collecting communal bins where we can get to them.
"Street cleaning staff will be working to 9.30pm this evening (Sunday 10 January) clearing pile ups of rubbish around communal bins in the city centre where we've been unable to collect them because of the snow and ice."
11.30am I have been directed to a blog post by Hove Councillor Paul Elgood which has an interesting clarification on the liability of those clearing snow and ice from the pavements outside their home.
11am Many people have asked why schools seem so ready to close when it snows. Our reporter Alison Cridland asked just that question of Sussex schools, and reports back here. 10.40am A reader asks whether he will still be able to recycle his Christmas tree as he has not been able to get to Brighton and Hove City Council's tree recycling spots because of the weather. The answer - yes, as they are remaining open until January 29.Click here for a list of recycling points.
10.20am Many schools are now open, and some high schools have opened to Year 11 students due to take exams. For a list of which schools are still closed, click here.
8.45am: First Capital Connect have said they are only operating two trains an hour between Bedford and Brighton because of the cold weather.
Southern are accepting FCC tickets but not the Gatwick Express.
7.20am: Snow is continuing to cause problems across Sussex today.
Many schools are opening for some pupils, particularly those sitting exams.
But many have still closed their doors, causing childcare problems for thousands of parents again.
Bus services in Brighton and Hove have again been affected.
A company spokesman said: "Due to the adverse weather conditions, some roads in the city and beyond are still treacherous and we are still unable to serve some areas.
"We regret that we are no longer able to provide shuttle services with coaches fitted with snow chains in the estates, as the snow chains are only suitable for use on roads that are covered in snow as the chains may otherwise break."
Services are operating as follows: 1/1A - Operating from Swanborough Drive to Mile Oak via normal route and timetable except via Boundary Road, A259 and Trafalgar Road in both directions instead of St Andrews Road. In Mile Oak, we are running the length of Graham Avenue as we are unable to serve Thornhill Rise at present.
Click here for a full list of bus services.
The spokesman added: "We hope to operate as many school buses as possible except those to Longhill School, which is closed today."
Southern train services are also again affected.
