With everything going on in the world of football at the moment, I thought I'd take the spotlight away from the first team this week (as if there isn't enough on it already what with court cases, winding up or.... I'll stop).

Idealists will always tell you, "a football club should be at the heart of a community". You can imagine it now, high Simon Cowell-esque trousers, scrumpled face talking like a know it all professor. It's true though, there's so much potential in football clubs to play a big part in their respective areas.

Most of the big clubs have realised it, you see on Sky Sports all the time the heroes from Saturday afternoon having a kick about with some 10 year olds from the local primary school. It seems, despite the impressive affect this can have on a club, non-league clubs haven't cottoned onto working in their community (or at least haven't told people they have).

Which brings me nicely onto the Lewes FC Community Scheme.

The scheme, which, for me, the club don't make enough song and dance about, has been running in the background managed by Darren Ford. If I went into everything it does, I'd have Howard on my back moaning for too much space being used! I'll run through a few of the main things and then, hopefully, encourage you to find out more for yourself.

Each school holiday, the scheme runs its Soccer Schools. Kids spend up to five days playing football under the guidance of Darren and his team learning all sorts of things. These in the past (having taken part myself) have been really good fun and well worth the money.

Alongside these schools, the scheme goes into local schools and teaches primary school children a variety of things ranging from actual football skills to the diet needed as a footballer, even teaching football based history and english lessons.

In the last few years, the Community Scheme has gone from strength to strength and now does a lot of work away from football, helping out young people who struggle at school, offering courses for adults and supporting the front side by providing mascots, and helping to increase support with more awareness of the club.

I won't go into too much more detail as I don't want to say anything incorrect (I'm basing this on what I can remember from a meeting with Darren 4 months ago) but I am sure that Darren would be perfectly happy to answer any questions.

Details about the scheme can be found on www.lewesfc.com along with Darren's contact details.

Ok, I can't resist a little mention of the front side. Rushden tomorrow. Then Kidderminster. Two extremely tough games, can we get anything? On recent form, no. But you never know in football.

Thanks for reading.
